Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) bridges scientific discovery with practical technological solutions. Our interdisciplinary approach leverages deep understanding of matter to create innovative material structures and properties, fostering technologies that benefit society worldwide. MSE researchers are pioneering advancements in diverse fields, including renewable energy production and storage, environmental monitoring and cleanup, computational modeling for materials prediction, aerospace materials for extreme conditions, space manufacturing techniques, quantum computing systems for data security, and next-generation electronic, photonic, and phononic devices. Many undergraduate students participate directly in faculty research, allowing them to tackle important scientific problems while experiencing MSE's cross-disciplinary nature through collaborative projects.
Our dedicated faculty and academic advisors support students in customizing their educational journey, beginning with a solid foundation in core principles and offering diverse electives with hands-on lab experiences covering ceramics, metals, polymers, and semiconductors. The curriculum explores fundamental material behaviors, their atomic-level origins, and techniques for manipulating properties through both conventional and advanced processing methods. Students gain expertise in areas ranging from metalworking and alloy creation to optoelectronic materials development and bio-inspired applications, mastering the principles behind modern industrial technologies and infrastructure.
