The English department provides foundational courses in composition and literary studies, along with advanced classes covering literature, linguistics, creative writing, technical communication, and critical analysis. Students can pursue a two-year M.A. in literature, a three-year M.F.A. in creative writing, or a dual M.F.A./M.A. program combining creative writing and literary studies, which takes three years to complete. Teaching assistantships support students in all three programs. The M.A. program focuses on deepening literary knowledge and theoretical understanding, ideal for aspiring educators or doctoral candidates. The M.F.A., as a terminal degree, requires students to craft a publishable thesis in poetry, fiction, drama, or creative nonfiction. The combined M.F.A./M.A. program allows motivated students to develop a professional creative manuscript while engaging in rigorous literary scholarship, preparing them for academic careers or Ph.D. studies.
