The UAF Metalsmithing program provides both BFA and MFA degrees in Metalsmithing. Introductory jewelry and metalworking classes are available at three progressive levels. Novice students start with shaping flat nonferrous sheets and wires, while intermediate learners focus on creating tools, casting techniques, and cold joining methods. Advanced pupils master hammering, thermal treatments, chemical processes, and specialized equipment. The curriculum fosters analytical approaches to creating practical and artistic pieces, with emphasis on overcoming challenges throughout project execution. Participants are motivated to refine their artistic vision and craftsmanship by exploring innovative designs and material applications.
