The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.), also known as the Alternative A program, is designed for individuals holding a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a non-education field. This program caters to students without a Class B teaching certification at the undergraduate level. Prospective candidates should consult with both the Teacher Certification Officer and their selected teaching field advisor for a personalized assessment of any undergraduate coursework gaps before enrolling. According to Alabama State Department of Education regulations, secondary education alternative fifth-year program applicants must possess either an academic major in their teaching discipline or, if not evident on transcripts, 32 semester hours relevant to the teaching field with a minimum of 19 upper-division credits.
This graduate program specifically serves those with a bachelor's degree in music or related fields who aspire to teach choral education (grades P-12). Successful completion not only awards the graduate degree but also satisfies the requirements for an ALSDE Alternative-A Teaching Certificate in Music: Choral Education (P-12).
