The Master of Science (MS) in Marine Science is an intensive research-focused program that equips students for professional roles in marine science or advanced studies toward a PhD in biological or marine sciences. Participants must undertake original research while choosing between two degree paths: Plan I (thesis-based) or Plan II (non-thesis). Plan I follows the conventional approach, demanding independent research, a university-standard thesis submission, and a public thesis defense. Plan II involves independent research culminating in a Capstone Experience Research Report, along with a formal research defense. Marine science students can work with primary advisors based at the University of Alabama's Tuscaloosa campus or with faculty stationed at the coastal Dauphin Island Sea Lab campus in Dauphin Island, AL.
