The School of Music provides Master of Music (MM) programs with specializations in composition (including an arranging focus), conducting (both wind and choral), musicology, performance, and music theory.
As an accredited institution under the National Association of Schools of Music, the School maintains all programs and policies in alignment with NASM standards. Doctoral studies are available through the Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) program, featuring specializations in composition, performance, choral conducting, and wind conducting. Students may pursue secondary specializations alongside any DMA concentration. Detailed curriculum information appears in the School of Music's Graduate Handbook. The MM degree includes concentrations in performance, composition, musicology, theory, choral conducting, wind conducting, and church music. Qualification Requirements

The Bachelor of Music degree in the chosen field of study from The University of Alabama or the equivalent from another accredited institution.
In special cases, a student holding the bachelor's degree but without a formal major in the chosen field may be admitted by examination.
Letters of Recommendation - Three letters of recommendation.
Portfolio is necessary in musicology, theory, composition, and arranging.
Audition is required for performance and conducting majors (sometimes replaced by an audition tape).
An audition or submission of portfolio is required which is heard/reviewed by the School of Music
An examination in musicianship and music theory is needed at the time of audition. A Diagnostic exam is required for those who apply for assistantships in theory. Also, diagnostic examinations in music theory and music history are required at the beginning of the first semester of study.
The minimum score(s) to be considered for regular admission:
TOEFL: 79, IELTS: 6.5, TOEFL PBT 550
The minimum GPA to be considered: 3 (for regular admission).
