The Department of Art and Art History provides an MFA program enabling students to focus on various artistic fields while developing compelling creative works as they train to become professional visual artists and instructors. Established in 1972, the program has propelled countless artists into successful creative professions worldwide. Intentionally small class sizes ensure students receive individual studio space and direct faculty mentorship. The MFA curriculum demands 60 credit hours in graduate studio courses, seminars, art history studies, critiques, and elective subjects. All academic requirements must be fulfilled within a six-year timeframe from program entry. Throughout their studies, graduate students deliver public presentations and showcase their work, concluding with a written thesis and final exhibition.
Main studio facilities occupy Woods Quad, while Sculpture and Ceramics departments operate from the Bureau of Mines complex. Garland Hall houses the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, which hosts rotating exhibitions of contemporary artwork and maintains an extensive collection focused on modern works on paper and photography. Woods Hall's Sella-Granata Art Gallery features a dynamic exhibition calendar including student showcases and other academically oriented displays.
