Since the 1950s, the Department of Anthropology has provided an acclaimed master's program. This research-focused degree covers all four branches of anthropology, which explores the origins and characteristics of human diversity through a comprehensive lens. The field integrates knowledge from humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. Our MA curriculum emphasizes archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology through this interdisciplinary framework.
Our program emphasizes rigorous training in research methodologies, practical applications, and theoretical foundations, making it suitable both for doctoral candidates and professionals seeking terminal master's qualifications. Contrary to some programs, we don't view our MA as an endpoint—approximately 50% of our PhD candidates each year are alumni of our master's program.
New students receive a faculty sponsor upon admission, who serves as a temporary advisor until a permanent mentor is selected. Under this advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies, students develop their academic path. All candidates must meet specific core requirements to obtain the MA degree.
