Clinical geropsychology represents an expanding specialty area, recognized through board certification by the American Board of Professional Psychology, that addresses the demands of our aging population. The University of Alabama's Psychology Department provides a scientist-practitioner track in geropsychology to equip professionals for both research and clinical work with older adults. Faculty in this specialization lead intervention studies (including randomized controlled trials, pragmatic trials, and demonstration projects) focused on elderly individuals, dementia caregivers, and those facing end-of-life circumstances. Their applied research examines cognitive function, decision-making processes (regarding medical, financial, and independent living matters), person-centered care approaches, long-term care quality (both formal and informal), and clinical education emphasizing community-based initiatives.
Research Focus Areas
Key investigation areas encompass
cultural influences (including racial/ethnic and rural/urban factors) on medical consent, financial choices, and independent living abilities,
stress-reduction methods for caregivers (both family and professional) dealing with chronic or terminal illnesses,
acceptance and commitment therapy along with other mindfulness-based approaches for seniors,
ethical considerations,
disparities related to race/ethnicity and geographic location,
and clinical training challenges (such as substance abuse disorders, empowering marginalized communities through local partnerships to improve treatment access, healthcare inequities, and competency evaluation training).
