Geology frequently attracts students who enjoy outdoor activities, traveling, environmental and energy concerns, and those aiming for careers in geoscience-related fields. The field integrates chemistry, physics, mathematics, and occasionally biology to analyze Earth's processes, requiring students to take diverse science courses. Majors also develop specialized lab and fieldwork skills essential for professional geologists.
The Department sponsors two student groups affiliated with professional associations—the American Institute of Professional Geologists and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists—both providing regular career-building events. It also oversees the Geology Club and a Sigma Gamma Epsilon chapter, the national Earth Sciences honor society, where students engage in academic, social, and volunteer initiatives, often involving field excursions. Undergraduates are highly encouraged to pursue lab or field research with faculty guidance and gain internship credits by collaborating with industry professionals.
