Geology attracts students who enjoy outdoor activities and travel, care about environmental and energy challenges, or seek careers in geoscience-related fields. The discipline integrates chemistry, physics, mathematics, and occasionally biology to analyze Earth's processes, requiring students to take diverse science courses. Majors also develop specialized lab and fieldwork skills essential for professional geology careers.
The Department sponsors student chapters of two professional groups—the American Institute of Professional Geologists and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists—both providing regular career-building events. It also oversees the Geology Club and a Sigma Gamma Epsilon chapter, the national Earth Sciences honor society, where students engage in educational, social, and service projects, frequently involving field excursions. Undergraduates are highly encouraged to pursue faculty-guided research and earn academic credit through internships with practicing geoscientists.
