For generations, the study of Latin (Classics) has formed the cornerstone of a comprehensive liberal arts education. The Romans, alongside the Greeks, established the bedrock principles underlying many Western values and intellectual traditions. Remarkably refined concepts of justice, fairness, human dignity, and liberty emerged from their societal challenges and have been passed down to us. Through Classics, we examine this legacy via surviving texts and artifacts. The Latin concentration primarily explores Roman achievements, with particular attention to mastering classical literature from 200 BCE to the Middle Ages.
Those pursuing a Latin major will develop expert reading proficiency by program completion. Our goal isn't linguistic mastery for its own sake, but rather to engage directly with ancient texts that explore timeless questions about human nature. Ideal candidates should demonstrate aptitude for language learning and broad interest in the humanities.
