Cultural Studies examines the connection between culture and significance, starting from the foundation that culture is neither impartial nor innate. This major encourages students to explore how culture is created, the effects of engaging with and interpreting culture, and how culture influences societies. Emphasizing critical analysis and social equity, cultural studies focuses on understanding culture through the lens of power dynamics. Specifically, it investigates how systemic issues like racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, xenophobia, classism, and other oppressive structures shape culture—and vice versa.
The cultural studies program equips students with writing, research, and communication skills while allowing them to explore subjects they care deeply about. These competencies prepare them to excel in critical theory, cultural analysis, and advocacy.
Graduates of Towson University's cultural studies program pursue careers in diverse fields such as diversity and inclusion initiatives, law and government, journalism and publishing, technology, non-profits, media and entertainment, community activism, and international affairs. Additionally, they gain a competitive advantage when applying for prestigious scholarships (such as Fulbright), programs like the Peace Corps, and graduate studies in various disciplines.
