The Master of Urban Design - Future Cities (MUD) program prepares upcoming urban designers, architects, and researchers to shape sustainable, healthy, and intelligent urban environments. Centered on forward-thinking solutions, the curriculum addresses critical modern challenges with long-term impacts, including building urban resilience, creating carbon-neutral neighborhoods, and leveraging smart technologies to enhance environmental well-being across various scales amid rapid urbanization and climate shifts. Participants gain access to cutting-edge research and skill development at both national and global levels, promoting innovation, entrepreneurial thinking, and creative problem-solving through interdisciplinary collaboration.

Partnering with the Jefferson Institute for Smart & Healthy Cities provides exceptional research and professional engagement prospects. The program pioneers new approaches by merging urban analytics, computational design, and smart technologies to tackle climate issues, public health crises, and other emerging challenges. Students can specialize in public health through the Jefferson College of Population Health or select other concentrations within the College of Architecture & the Built Environment, such as Geodesign, Urban Revitalization, Smart Cities & Urban Analytics, or Resilient Cities.

Qualification Requirements

Transcripts: Applicants are required to submit an official transcript for their highest earned degree.
For programs with prerequisite coursework, official transcripts from the institution(s) where the coursework was taken are required.
For programs with advanced standing (Master of Architecture, the Master of Science in Interior Architecture, and the Master of Urban Design), official transcripts from all institutions are required in order to be considered for advanced standing.
Personal Statement: Submit a statement of purpose outlining your interest in the program, how the course of study relates to your desired career path, and your academic and job-related experiences that are relevant to the program.
Letters of Recommendation: Submit two letters of reference that provide insight into your academic and/or professional competence. References from college or university faculty members or professional sources are accepted. You may request recommendations through your MyJefferson account.
R'sum: A current professional r'sum is required.
Portfolio: A portfolio of previous design work is required for applicants with a background in architecture or allied field. For students entering the Foundation Year, a portfolio is not required.
Degree Prerequisite: Applicants are required to hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent upon evaluation of international transcripts prior to the start of the program.
GPA Requirement: A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA is recommended.
