The Master of Music Education can be earned through either a 30-credit thesis program or a 36-credit non-thesis option. Certain graduate music program applicants must provide Graduate Record Examination General Test scores, though this requirement doesn't apply to performance-focused Master of Music or Doctor of Musical Arts candidates. Incoming graduate students undergo placement assessments in music history, theory, and either applied music (for performance majors) or music education (for music education majors). Even Texas Tech alumni holding bachelor's degrees in music or music education must complete these placement tests. The School of Music administers all placement and preliminary exams during each semester's registration period, with any identified gaps addressed through supplementary coursework.
