Beyond the Graduate School's requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree, candidates must show exceptional mastery in their chosen research field by compiling a substantial record of achievements. This portfolio must include at least two peer-reviewed articles either published or accepted in reputable journals within their discipline before their thesis defense. Faculty advisors may set higher publication requirements at their discretion. To earn the Ph.D., students must complete no fewer than 60 graduate credit hours, including 12 hours of ME 8000 (Doctoral Dissertation), pass the qualifying examination, present their thesis proposal, and successfully defend their dissertation publicly. The coursework consists of a minimum of 12 lecture-based classes (36 credits) along with research-oriented courses.
