The Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction centers on curriculum as an area of scholarly investigation, cultivating expertise in examining and tackling the multifaceted questions that shape curriculum theory, design, implementation, assessment, and evaluation. This program aims to develop curriculum specialists, scholars, and educators equipped with the competencies to critically analyze, develop, and assess educational programs that foster ideal learning environments for diverse student populations. Through rigorous preparation, graduates will gain the ability to scrutinize implicit biases and navigate the intricate challenges present in educational systems within pluralistic societies. Special emphasis is placed on exploring the philosophical, conceptual, historical, sociocultural, moral, and political frameworks that influence curriculum development across all educational offerings.
The general education pathway within Curriculum & Instruction caters to learners seeking broad expertise rather than focusing on one of the three existing specialization tracks (Curriculum Studies and Teacher Education, Language, Diversity & Literacy Studies, or STEM Education). This flexible degree option allows students to select 24 credit hours of advanced coursework (5000-level or higher, available through various delivery formats at TTU's Lubbock campus), enabling them to develop diverse competencies across educational theories, foundational principles, research methods, innovative learning approaches, or specific subject areas aligned with their academic interests.
