The English Department is dedicated to enhancing students' reading and writing capabilities, deepening their appreciation of modern discourse and literary traditions, and honing their creative and analytical skills through outstanding research, instruction, and service. Our faculty focuses on both interpreting and creating texts while pioneering new approaches at the crossroads of literature, linguistics, creative writing, composition, rhetoric, and technical communication. Students will gain the ability to critically analyze literature, language, culture, and technology while mastering diverse forms of sophisticated, nuanced, rhetorically powerful, and ethically sound oral and written communication.
The English program consists of 120 semester credit hours, covering core curriculum, major requirements, and a minor. Students majoring in English must select a specialization in literature and language, creative writing, or the secondary education teaching certificate program. A maximum of 9 advanced transfer credits in English can be applied toward the major. The creative writing concentration within the English major is tailored for aspiring fiction, nonfiction, and poetry writers who seek mentorship from practicing authors. This track emphasizes literature courses to help students better grasp and employ the techniques of various writing genres. Beyond writing and literary exploration, this concentration is ideal for those pursuing careers in college-level creative writing instruction, graduate studies in literature and writing, or preparation for professional programs like law and business.
