The reading program equips certified educators to boost language and literacy skills for all learners across diverse educational environments. Grounded in its mission of fostering "a community of equity-focused literacy experts," the program demonstrates this commitment through faculty research and mentorship of graduate students, both inside and outside academic settings. Participants engage in a challenging, evidence-based curriculum exploring various aspects of language and literacy growth. Coursework expands educators' knowledge of theory, research, evaluation methods, and practical applications in culturally and linguistically varied classrooms. Faculty members frequently collaborate with students on classroom-based research, presenting findings at conferences and in publications. The program aims to refine teaching methodologies while supporting Pre-K-12 learners throughout Texas and other regions.
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Reading Education includes studies in literacy development, reading/writing theories, instructional strategies for PK-16 and community settings, literature instruction across age groups, multilingual/multicultural literacy approaches, and assessment techniques. Graduates qualify to meet International Reading Association standards for roles as Reading Specialists, Literacy Coaches, or Reading Administrators.
