This program merges an M.Ed. with initial teacher certification for grades 4-8 in subjects including English Language Arts/Reading, Social Studies, ELAR/SS, Mathematics, Science, or Core Subjects. Originally established as a normal school—a higher education institution dedicated to teacher preparation—Texas State University has maintained its excellence in educator training for 125 years. It's the perfect option for career switchers seeking both certification and a master's degree, designed to accommodate adult learners whether they're studying full-time or balancing work commitments.
Our cutting-edge 4-8 C.M.Ed. programs (combining an M.Ed. with teacher certification) provide the essential pedagogical knowledge for effectively teaching young adolescents at this critical developmental stage. Students can specialize in various content areas (ELAR, Social Studies, ELAR/SS, Math, Science, or Core Subjects) while engaging in broader educational discourse. While most classes are conducted online via synchronous evening sessions, some in-person coursework is available at our San Marcos or Round Rock campuses.
Earning a master's in 4-8 education opens doors to teaching across multiple grade levels (elementary, intermediate, or middle schools). Graduates gain qualifications to teach in their specialization areas and can advance to leadership roles like grade-level team leads, mentor teachers, or instructional coaches. The degree also serves as a foundation for those pursuing administrative careers (through an Ed.D.) or academic research (via a Ph.D.).
