This program merges an M.Ed. with initial 4-8 teaching certification in subjects like English Language Arts/Reading, Social Studies, ELAR/SS, Math, Science, or Core Subjects. Originally established as a normal school—a higher education institution focused on teacher preparation—Texas State University has maintained its excellence in educator training for 125 years. It's the perfect option for career switchers seeking certification alongside a master's degree, designed to accommodate both full-time students and working professionals.
Our forward-thinking 4-8 C.M.Ed. programs (combining an M.Ed. with teacher certification) provide the essential pedagogical knowledge for effectively instructing young adolescents in age-appropriate ways. Students can specialize in various 4-8 content areas (including ELAR, Social Studies, ELAR/SS, Math, Science, or Core Subjects) while engaging in a broader educational community. While most classes are conducted online in real-time during evenings, some in-person coursework is available at our San Marcos or Round Rock campuses.
Earning a master's in 4-8 education opens doors to teaching across multiple grade levels (elementary, intermediate, or middle schools, grades 4-8). Graduates gain qualifications to teach in their chosen specialization and can advance to roles like grade-level leaders, mentor teachers, or instructional coaches. This degree also serves as a foundation for those pursuing administrative positions (via an Ed.D.) or academic careers (through a Ph.D.).
