Communication studies investigates how messages are formed, conveyed, and interpreted across personal, professional, and public contexts. At the graduate level, the curriculum emphasizes research on communication's connection to social awareness, analytical reasoning, and decision-making abilities in various life domains. The program covers topics including interpersonal dynamics, organizational interactions, rhetorical analysis, healthcare communication, and inclusive messaging. Graduates thrive as culturally aware leaders, creative problem-solvers, skilled researchers, effective writers, and compelling presenters across multiple environments.
The flexible Master of Arts (M.A.) in Communication Studies offers a comprehensive, non-thesis track that allows for wide-ranging exploration. All students begin in this program, with the option to switch to the thesis track after their initial semester. With advisor consent, learners may incorporate up to six credits from outside the department.
The curriculum enables specialization in various focus areas: corporate communications, rhetorical analysis, professional development training, healthcare messaging, personal interactions, or educational communication. Cross-disciplinary options include courses in media studies, education, literature, behavioral sciences, social research, and management. The department advocates for a well-rounded approach to understanding human communication through diverse academic perspectives.
