The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Texas State stands among the nation's largest undergraduate programs in its field. Their geography program presents diverse academic paths, allowing students to pursue either a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. These curricula equip students with knowledge about our world while cultivating analytical abilities to address practical challenges. The B.A. mandates 30 credit hours in Geography, whereas the B.S. requires 36 hours. Students can apply up to two extra Geography courses toward their major. All geography students must complete a minor, ideally chosen with guidance from an academic advisor. Urban planning represents a multifaceted career that utilizes geographic knowledge and technical expertise. The B.S. in Urban and Regional Planning enables graduates to assess and implement initiatives that enhance local communities and broader regions. Planners examine critical elements like demographic changes, infrastructure, economic trends, educational needs, municipal services, and ecological concerns. Texas State alumni work as professional planners both within Texas and internationally.
