The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Texas State stands as one of the most extensive undergraduate programs of its type in the U.S. Its undergraduate curriculum features a diverse array of majors, allowing students to pursue either a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. These programs are crafted to deepen students' comprehension of their global environment and equip them with the analytical abilities needed to address and resolve practical issues. The B.A. mandates at least 30 semester credit hours in Geography and Environmental Studies, whereas the B.S. requires a minimum of 36 hours. Students majoring in this field can include up to two extra Geography and Environmental Studies courses in their major. Completing a minor is obligatory for majors, and they are advised to choose one in discussion with an academic advisor.
The program's core philosophy emphasizes a solid foundation in geographic content combined with Geographic Information Science principles and techniques, such as GIS, remote sensing, visualization, cartography, spatial modeling, and quantitative methods. The Bachelor of Science major in Geographic Information Science was specifically designed and organized for roles in various sectors, including local, state, and federal agencies, commercial enterprises, planning departments, engineering firms, utility companies, and more.
