The Bachelor of Science in Geographic Information Science (GIS) provides instruction in spatial data theory, research methods, and practical applications, equipping students for careers in the expanding geospatial industry. Through project-focused coursework, the curriculum develops expertise in spatial analysis and computational approaches, teaching students to employ geospatial technologies for data examination and to present findings through visual, verbal, and written communication. Graduates will gain technical proficiency in programming, web-based mapping, project implementation, data acquisition and management, and cartographic design.
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at SJSU provides undergraduate and graduate programs in Geography, along with accredited Master's degrees in Urban Planning and Public Administration. The department also offers minor programs in Geography, Geographic Information Science, and Urban Studies. Additionally, it provides seven specialized graduate certificates concentrating on various domains including affordable housing, community development, environmental planning, geographic information science, real estate development, transportation systems, and urban design. As interdisciplinary fields, planning and geography are taught by internationally recognized faculty with diverse academic training in architecture, economics, history, geography, sociology, and urban planning.
