The Department of Theatre and Dance champions equity and inclusive representation that mirrors our diverse student body, fosters unity, cultivates empathy, and rejects discrimination. We actively promote social justice by ensuring fair access for every student, free from prejudice based on race, ethnicity, gender, age, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, faith, socioeconomic background, or political views. As creative professionals and academics, we pursue meaningful partnerships in our learning environments, rehearsal studios, and performance venues with a steadfast commitment to fair representation and the intentional inclusion of historically marginalized voices and their artistic contributions.
Our curriculum develops skilled practitioners across multiple disciplines - including acting, design, writing, filmmaking, editing, production, direction, technical arts, performance, and choreography - while also training future educators. Learners benefit from direct mentorship by accomplished artist-instructors with global reputations. Our distinguished faculty includes Broadway performers, television stars, professional dance company members, Tony Award-winning regional theater veterans, acclaimed filmmakers, musical choreographers, internationally exhibited designers, Cannes and SXSW festival participants, published authors, and playwrights with productions worldwide. We maintain an optimal balance between comprehensive resources and individualized student support. This offering delivers practical professional training in theater or film production and may be taken twice for credit.
Texas State University's Film Program cultivates well-rounded cinematic storytellers. Students acquire intensive practical skills and comprehensive knowledge of filmmaking processes and narrative techniques. We emphasize both technical mastery and artistic vision, equipping graduates with marketable skills for industry careers. A distinctive strength of our program lies within its interdisciplinary home in the Department of Theatre and Dance, part of the College of Fine Arts and Communication. This unique positioning allows film students to benefit from cross-disciplinary expertise in performance, dramatic writing, and production technology while facilitating dynamic creative partnerships with peers in Theater, Dance, and Music programs.
