Sociology examines how people and communities function within social structures. Using research and analysis, sociologists explore human relationships and societal systems to address pressing social issues. Our Sociology Department features dedicated professors who integrate their varied research expertise into teaching. The curriculum covers diverse topics including racial and class dynamics, gender studies, criminal behavior, aging research, media studies, activism, ecological issues, and more. As a cornerstone of liberal arts, sociology equips students with critical thinking abilities and hands-on experience in research methodologies and data interpretation.
Students pursuing sociology can select between a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Applied Sociology. The B.A. program emphasizes theoretical foundations for advanced academic or professional pursuits, while the B.S. focuses on developing practical research competencies for immediate career entry or graduate studies. Both programs mandate 39 credit hours in sociology, with the B.S. offering valuable internship experience that bridges academic learning with professional applications.
Our department offers personalized academic guidance and urges all students - both current and prospective - to utilize these resources. While sample degree pathways assist with scheduling, they should never replace individualized advising sessions with faculty.
