This program offers students a complete pathway to obtain teaching certification in Social Studies. The History Department oversees the academic content, while the College of Public Affairs and Education manages the Secondary Education Minor. While many graduates pursue careers as Social Studies teachers at the secondary level, others continue their education in fields like history, law, library science, international relations, diplomacy, ministry, business, government, or museum and archival work. The Social Studies major's core objective is equipping students with the subject matter expertise needed to teach Social Studies in high schools. It establishes the foundational knowledge for entering the teaching field while developing essential skills in critical analysis, logical reasoning, and scholarly evaluation that support lifelong learning.
The Social Studies major's fundamental purpose is to prepare students with the subject mastery required for secondary school Social Studies instruction. It creates the academic foundation for launching teaching careers while fostering the analytical, reasoning, and judgment abilities that serve as the basis for continuous intellectual development.
If you have successfully completed your high school degree (12 years of primary and secondary education), you are considered an undergraduate student at CSU.
