The Master of Science in Economics program, specializing in Financial Econometrics or Financial Economics through Texas A&M University's Department of Economics, is a STEM-designated program designed to deliver comprehensive training in economics, econometrics, and quantitative analysis. This equips students with the skills needed for careers in business or government, or for pursuing advanced studies in leading economics and finance Ph.D. programs. Launched in 2011 after a thorough two-year redesign, this professional Master's degree addresses growing student and employer demand for specialized economics training. The program can be completed in either 18 or 24 months, continuing a tradition of terminal Master's degrees offered by the department since 1931.
While most students opt for the non-thesis track, requiring 36 credit hours, those choosing the thesis option must complete 32 credit hours, produce a thesis with faculty guidance, and pass a final oral examination.
The curriculum features core courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and business finance, alongside specialized classes in behavioral economics, international economics, advanced econometrics, and institutional analysis. A capstone research project provides hands-on experience, and students are advised to pursue internships during their first summer.
