Transportation engineers focus on ensuring the safe and smooth flow of people and commodities. They create and upkeep various transportation infrastructures such as roads, public transit networks, railway systems, airports, and maritime facilities.
These professionals combine technical expertise with considerations of economic, political, and social aspects in their work. Collaboration with urban planners is essential, as a community's wellbeing is closely tied to its transportation network's effectiveness.
Academic programs offer M.S., M.Eng., and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering with a specialization in transportation engineering.
Both the Master of Science (M.S.) programs (with or without thesis) and the Master of Engineering (M.Eng) require 30 credit hours, while the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program consists of 64 credit hours. Course selections are determined through consultation between the student, their committee chair, and the graduate committee.
