Comparative Politics examines political systems across multiple countries to enable methodical comparisons. This field primarily employs two methodologies: cross-national analysis and area studies. Cross-national research simultaneously investigates numerous countries to explore theoretical questions with wide relevance, typically utilizing quantitative data analysis. Area studies focus on detailed examination of specific nations or regions, requiring deep cultural and linguistic understanding of the area. While our department's comparative politics specialists possess expertise in various countries and global regions, our program prioritizes cross-national studies with quantitative approaches. Although certain courses explore unique political characteristics of particular locations, the graduate curriculum emphasizes topic-focused courses and research, with all students receiving training in quantitative methods.
