Transportation engineers specialize in creating and managing systems for the secure and effective transit of passengers and cargo. They develop and oversee various transport infrastructures such as roads, public transit networks, railway systems, airports, and maritime ports.
These professionals combine technical expertise with knowledge of economic, political, and social considerations in their work. Collaboration with urban planners is essential, as a community's overall wellbeing is closely tied to its transportation network's effectiveness.
The Ph.D. program is focused on research and demands at least 64 semester credit hours of approved coursework and research beyond the M.S. degree (or 96 credits beyond the B.S. degree). Both university regulations and the Civil Engineering Department have specific requirements regarding these credit hours.
