The Marine Sciences (MARS) program's license option (LO) prepares students for certification as deck officers in the U.S. Merchant Marine. This track maintains MARS' rigorous physical science foundation while incorporating specialized training for the U.S. Coast Guard's Third Mate licensing exam, applicable to all ocean-going vessels. The curriculum blends theoretical studies in physical sciences and mathematics with hands-on maritime skills, navigation training, and three oceanography courses. Designed to equip students with both academic knowledge and practical expertise, the program prepares graduates for careers in the maritime sector, particularly on research vessels where scientific comprehension is essential. Those pursuing graduate studies in physical sciences may need supplementary coursework. License-seeking cadets must pass either the Third Mate or Third Assistant Engineer exam and meet all program-specific licensing criteria to earn their Texas A&M degree. Some LO courses mandate a minimum C grade (70%) for completion.
