The Master of Science in Music program offers graduate students an opportunity to enhance their musical knowledge while blending academic research with practical application. This versatile degree provides advanced training that bridges scholarly inquiry with creative endeavors, enabling students to either deepen their primary performance skills or venture into new musical disciplines beyond their undergraduate focus. While distinct from specialized M.M. programs in classical or jazz performance, Temple's Boyer College program combines intensive musical training with analytical research. Participants engage in graduate-level coursework, applying research methodologies to artistic practice while developing either their principal performance area or discovering alternative musical expressions. Although no audition is needed for admission, students undergo placement evaluations during their first semester for lesson and ensemble assignments. The program's flexible structure encompasses vocal, instrumental, and keyboard instruction across diverse genres like classical, jazz, and contemporary music, alongside elective studies in music education, technology, theater, history, and theory. Collaborative coursework with peers from other graduate music disciplines fosters interdisciplinary exchange, culminating in a capstone project that demonstrates analytical skills through either written work, presentations, or performances. The program concludes with a faculty-evaluated final recital showcasing the student's artistic and scholarly growth.
