State and local governments face significant challenges in maintaining balanced budgets while continuing to provide crucial public services. Economic instability, public reluctance to fund government services through taxes, increasing mandates, and reduced federal support have made efficient governance and strong financial practices more critical than ever.
The State and Local Government Financial Analysis and Management program equips students with foundational knowledge about fiscal challenges facing policymakers, along with practical skills needed for careers in budgeting, finance offices, legislative agencies, and other state-local financial roles.
This field of study introduces students to major financial institutions, analytical methods for fiscal problems, and key sources of financial data.
Faculty research and consulting projects currently focus on multiple areas, including: improving revenue and expenditure forecasting models, analyzing tax and spending restrictions, evaluating government credit and capital financing options, funding environmental infrastructure projects, managing public employee benefits, tracking urban fiscal health, assessing mandate impacts on local budgets, guiding financial transitions in emerging democracies, examining school funding equity and efficiency, and analyzing public service cost factors.
