The Maxwell School's Social Science Ph.D. Program offers an interdisciplinary approach for scholars whose research spans multiple social science fields. Students work closely with faculty advisors from across the Maxwell School to design customized study programs that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. Launched in 1946 as America's first social sciences doctoral program, it was created with the belief that broad, interdisciplinary training often serves future faculty in social and policy sciences better than narrow specialization. The program's founders recognized that understanding societal issues frequently demands insights from multiple fields - including political science, geography, sociology, anthropology, history, international relations, economics, and public administration. This perspective remains particularly relevant in today's increasingly interconnected world. While most graduates pursue academic careers, others assume leadership roles across private, nonprofit, and government sectors.
