The Ph.D. program grants degrees to candidates who fulfill all academic requirements, including coursework, qualifying exams, and dissertation defense. A total of 42 credit hours of classes plus 30 dissertation credits are mandatory, with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Transfer requests for up to 21 credits from other institutions may be submitted. Before taking qualifying exams, students must submit a Program of Study. Ph.D. candidates automatically qualify for an M.A. upon meeting those degree requirements.
Mastering International Relations involves completing core coursework along with extensive supplementary reading. IR majors typically take four field-specific courses within their first four semesters, while minors complete three. Qualifying Exams occur each August after the second program year.
Those needing specialized language training relevant to their research may petition for schedule adjustments. All modifications require written approval from the Graduate Director.
