The Chemical Engineering PhD program prepares students for careers in research and academia. This rigorous curriculum includes specialized coursework, qualifying exams, a candidacy oral examination, and dissertation development and defense.
To earn the doctorate, candidates must complete at least 42 credit hours, with a minimum of 24 credits in chemical engineering courses. Dissertation work does not count toward these credits. Students entering with a master's degree may transfer up to 30 approved credits. The program typically takes three to five years to finish, with most students completing all requirements within this timeframe.

Qualification Requirements

All graduate students must achieve the following minimum grade point averages (GPA):

3.000 GPA for all credits counted toward the completion of coursework requirements, and
2.800 GPA cumulative for all credits earned at Syracuse University.
Graduate students in the PhD program may not count more than 14 credits of 500-level coursework toward the completion of their PhD program of study.
