The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Studio Arts is designed for aspiring professional artists.
This program emphasizes contemporary art creation, offering in-depth study of traditional disciplines like ceramics, jewelry-making, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, alongside modern approaches including installation art, performance pieces, public artworks, and social practice.
Students can specialize in a single traditional medium or adopt an interdisciplinary approach, blending various techniques and methodologies with guidance from mentors and advisors. Focused on professional development, the curriculum equips students with the tools to establish enduring artistic careers, continuing Syracuse University's tradition of nurturing groundbreaking artists and cultural leaders.
Our ceramics specialization trains future professional ceramic artists. Students are encouraged to experiment with diverse forms including functional pottery, sculptural works, tile designs, and other specialized areas of interest.
Introductory studio classes cover fundamental skills like hand-building, wheel-throwing, and mold techniques, along with glaze chemistry basics and application methods. Students also master decorative processes, kiln operation, and studio upkeep. Advanced students employ both conventional and innovative methods for creating production pieces and unique artworks, formulating custom glazes, clay bodies, and slips while managing their own kiln firings.
All studio disciplines share the common goal of fostering creative exploration. We challenge students to embrace experimentation while developing their artistic voice, balancing innovation with respect for traditional practices. The program encourages cross-disciplinary dialogue, supporting everything from functional craft to conceptual investigations - a hallmark of our 110-year legacy in arts education.
