Linguistics is the systematic examination of language, exploring key questions such as: What constitutes language knowledge, and how is it learned and utilized? What commonalities and variations exist between languages? How is language processed in the brain? How does human language differ from animal communication? What role does language serve in society? Why and how does language evolve? Beyond theoretical inquiry, linguistics finds practical applications in language instruction, computer science, marketing, and various fields where language is fundamental.
The Linguistic Studies Program is a cross-disciplinary initiative that includes not only 'LIN'-coded courses from the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics but also draws from multiple academic areas: Anthropology, Child and Family Studies, Cognitive Science, Communications Sciences and Disorders, Communication and Rhetorical Studies, Computer and Information Science, Reading and Language Arts, Information Studies, Philosophy, and Spanish.
At the undergraduate level, the program provides both Major and Minor options, while graduate students can pursue a Master of Arts degree.
