The Health Humanities integrated learning major (ILM) strengthens Arts and Science/Maxwell students' readiness for healthcare careers by offering coursework that examines health and medicine within broader social and cultural contexts. This ILM can complement any primary major. The program explores crucial social and ethical issues relevant to all medical disciplines while expanding students' perspectives on potential career pathways in healthcare.
Student Learning Objectives
1. Define and explain the scope of health humanities as a discipline
2. Outline, differentiate, and connect fundamental theories and approaches from humanities and social sciences, especially those applicable to health humanities
3. Explain how health humanities intersects with and enhances the student's primary field(s) of study
4. Utilize health humanities knowledge to analyze, both verbally and in written form, health-related media content and statements using at least two humanities/social science theoretical frameworks
4. Employ health humanities concepts to assess health-related media and claims through multiple academic perspectives, demonstrating critical thinking skills
5. Apply health humanities principles to reflect on personal experiences in healthcare environments using at least two theoretical approaches from humanities and social sciences
