Economists examine how markets operate internally and their resulting effects. Contemporary economics primarily deals with market dynamics, yet markets don't always perform optimally, creating opportunities for policy interventions. Our program highlights using economic principles to address public policy challenges and exploring government's role within market systems. This encompasses studying international commerce and diplomacy, workplace economic patterns, healthcare systems, tax policies, and various sectors of the worldwide economy. Economics majors equip themselves for diverse career paths. While some continue to graduate studies to become professional economists, most enter fields like law, public administration, government service, and various business sectors including finance, management, and marketing. Many students opt for combined majors or dual degrees. Additional details about these programs can be found in the Academic Rules and Regulations section or by contacting the economics department directly.
The department provides both a B.A. in economics with a liberal arts approach focusing on practical applications and policy, and a STEM-certified B.S. in economics designed for students with stronger mathematical interests.
Applications for the MPA component of the joint degree program are typically submitted in the junior year spring semester, after declaring a major and completing 75 undergraduate credits.
Prospective students should consult with the MPA program's admissions director prior to applying. Required materials usually include two faculty recommendation letters (with at least one from the student's major department), a resume, personal statement, and academic transcripts. Syracuse University students are exempt from submitting GRE and TOEFL scores.
