Chemistry, the study of matter's composition, structure, characteristics, and transformations—particularly at atomic, elemental, and molecular levels—is taught via analytical, biological, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry courses, along with hands-on research experience. Chemistry undergraduates can choose among four tracks: two Bachelor of Arts programs focusing on either general chemistry or biological chemistry, and two Bachelor of Science programs specializing in either chemistry or medical chemistry. The B.A. pathways require fewer chemistry credits than the B.S. options while still establishing a solid disciplinary foundation suitable for professional work or advanced studies. Those pursuing a B.S. in chemistry receive more comprehensive training by meeting additional requirements; they must submit a formal request to the department chair declaring their B.S. degree intentions before graduation.
