Biology majors build a foundational understanding of the field through introductory core courses during their first two years, which explore biology's key sub-disciplines. This initial coursework prepares students for more specialized advanced classes.
The biology program offers both B.A. and B.S. degree options. The B.S. track caters to those planning graduate studies in biological sciences or health professions (including medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine). Alongside biology coursework, B.S. candidates complete general chemistry, organic chemistry, and calculus requirements. The program also recommends gaining hands-on experience through university opportunities.
The B.A. pathway suits students aiming for science-related careers not requiring advanced degrees, or non-biology fields where scientific knowledge is beneficial, such as science journalism, business, or legal professions. While both degrees share similar introductory biology requirements, the B.A. has fewer chemistry, math, and upper-level biology course obligations compared to the B.S.
