Alongside liberal arts studies, you'll specialize in a certification field (such as biology, chemistry, earth sciences, English, French, German, mathematics, physics, social studies, or Spanish) while exploring complementary arts and sciences subjects. To teach secondary education, you'll develop expertise in your chosen field along with knowledge of learning theories and adolescent psychology.
Starting typically in your third year, hands-on field experiences in varied school environments will ready you for classroom leadership. Our Clinical Practice and Partnerships Office facilitates placements in diverse locations, including Central New York regional schools and urban centers like Syracuse, Rochester, and New York City. The Curriculum and Instruction Department provides Bachelor of Science programs leading to NYS initial teaching certification in multiple areas: Childhood 1-6 (covering subjects like The Arts, English, mathematics, and sciences), Adolescence 7-12 (including biology, chemistry, and social studies), and TESOL K-12. All programs combine pedagogical coursework with content-area studies, with Adolescence 7-12 and TESOL students particularly encouraged to pursue a second major in their teaching concentration.
