This interdisciplinary program draws courses from anthropology, art, economics, English and creative writing, history, music, philosophy, political science, and sociology departments. Working closely with a faculty advisor, students can customize the curriculum to align with their academic interests, culminating in a senior seminar focused on a specific aspect or era of American culture.
The program's interdisciplinary nature opens doors to diverse internship opportunities in museums, publishing houses, government offices, and beyond. SUNY Oswego's location in the historic city of Oswego - once a hub for trade, commerce, and military strategy - provides an ideal setting for this study. Local historical sites include Fort Ontario, a significant military post in early conflicts; the Safe Haven Museum, which honors a unique WWII refugee shelter; and ties to the Underground Railroad network.
