The Plant Biology Program provides both Undergraduate and Graduate degree options for those passionate about studying plants scientifically. Our faculty specialize in diverse areas including plant anatomy, biodiversity, conservation, ecology, evolution, morphology, phylogeny, physiology, phytochemistry, and systematics.
Graduate students must complete at least 30 credit hours beyond their bachelor's degree, with a minimum of 22 hours in plant biology courses. This includes up to 9 hours of individualized instruction (with 2-3 seminar hours allowed) and 3-6 thesis hours. Students may need a graduate minor of 10+ hours, as decided with their advisory committee. Upon finishing their thesis, candidates must present their research publicly in addition to passing the comprehensive examination.

Qualification Requirements

2.7 (on a grading scale with 4.0=A, approximately a B- average) on the last two years of Bachelor's coursework, 3.0 on all previous graduate work (approximately a B average).
Applicants for the Master's degree must have a Bachelor Degree (or equivalent) in a life science, and have had a course in genetics. A student who does not meet these requirements may petition for admission to the department, or register as a regular nondeclared graduate student. Either prior to admission or during their programs, students must complete a course in each of the following categories:

plant systematics or plant diversity
plant physiology, cell biology or molecular biology
plant ecology or environmental science
A course in plant morphology or plant anatomy is strongly recommended.

A student deficient in three or fewer of these five areas must be admitted with conditional standing. A student admitted with conditional standing must make up all deficiencies within the first academic year, and until such deficiencies are completed, no more than ten academic units can be accrued toward the degree. Students lacking four or more of these areas must register as nondeclared. All deficiencies must be made up by taking for credit the pertinent undergraduate or graduate courses and passing each course with a grade of B or better.
The English language requirement may be met by submitting: 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 80 on the internet-based TOEFL, 6.5 on the IELTS
