For hundreds of years, biological methods have been utilized to create wine, beer, and fermented foods. With advancements in techniques and production efficiency, items like antibiotics, vitamins, enzymes, specialty chemicals, and even bulk chemicals are now manufactured through bioprocessing. These bioprocesses commonly use microbial fermentation, filtration or centrifugation, precipitation and/or crystallization, followed by drying. Developing large-scale, economically viable production methods generally requires knowledge of microbiology, fermentation technology, reaction kinetics, separation science, and process economics.
