Biocatalysis explores biological and chemical processes that utilize biocatalysts like enzymes and proteins. This field equips students with knowledge for conventional upstream operations, including bioreactor and fermenter design principles. Many chemical and biological reactions occur at liquid-solid interfaces and are often constrained by diffusion. Grasping surface phenomena and accurately modeling reaction kinetics allows engineers to develop processes with maximum efficiency, optimal reaction rates, and properly scaled equipment. These fundamentals underpin numerous industrial bioprocesses. Pilot plant resources in these domains are also accessible.
