Patent law, a specialized branch of intellectual property law, requires attorneys to possess a scientific background (e.g., engineering, biology, chemistry, or physics) for patent bar registration. Only registered patent attorneys may represent inventors in patent applications, achieved by passing the Patent Bar Exam. Non-registered attorneys can still participate in other patent-related work, such as litigation.
